What to expect at a Groovy Movie Dance Party

Waltz Disney
Hustle

Our next Dance Party is this Saturday!

At 7:30 Saturday, May 13, we will fly our Hollywood fan-flag in a star-studded evening of epic grooviness. But what does that mean?

First - everyone is welcome! Beginners, advanced, in between - there will be dancing for you. Solos, couples, groups, gaggles - there's space for you. Movie nerds - we want to hear all about the movies while you're here.

The evening will start with a Hustle Lesson (think music from Staying Alive, Fame, Top Gun, and Footloose). The lesson will start beginner-friendly but will end flashing enough to make you lose your head. In other words, the end of the lesson maybe a bit too challenging for newer dancers. We suggest you give it a try anyway, but don't stress if you don't get the hang of eveything.

After that, we'll play dance music all evening. We've Tangos from Mulan and Scent of a Woman; Waltzes from Austin Powers, Shrek, and Papillon; and Swings, Salsas, Hustles (of course!), etc from too many sountracks to mention.

We will have snacks and drinks out for you to try as you visit and dance through the evening. So far, we've got fruit and veggies, chips, and nuts. No cookies or sweets yet - anyone want to fill that gap?

We appreciate early registration for our dance parties. You can let us know you're coming by email or phone message, or by paying ahead at SapphireBallroom.Square.site.

GRoovie Movies playlistPlaylist

In making the playlist, one set of soundtracks kept appearing over and over again. Here is a small sample of our playlist, all from the same franchise, to get you in the mood.

Goldfinger by Dame Shirley Bassey

Movie: Goldfinger (1974)
Dance Style: an absolutely killer Rumba
https://youtu.be/zL0K_Zt3mf8

Goldeneye by Tina Turner

Movie: Goldeneye (1995)
Dance Style: a thrilling Cha Cha
https://youtu.be/1_Aq5rQdPso

Die Another Day by Madonna

Movie: Die Another Day (2002)
Dance Style: a conflicted Tango, West Coast Swing, Cha - You'll have to choose your side....
https://youtu.be/VlbaJA7aO9M

For Your Eyes Only by Sheena Easton

Movie: For Your Eyes Only (1981)
Dance Style: a disarmingly romantic Bolero
https://youtu.be/FTXLhEk3J8E

Skyfall by Adele

Movie: Skyfall (2012)
Dance Style: an apocalypticly good Rumba
https://youtu.be/DeumyOzKqgI

NOTE: I did eventually realize that all the themes had the same names as their respective movies, but by then I'd done enough I just decided to keep going. I also noticed that all of my selectiosn were by female artists. Not intentional, I promise. It just so happens the most dance-able James Bond songs are by women.

Hustle
Rumba

Fridays, May 5, 12, & 19 then June 2, 9, & 16

Friday Beginner Workshops

Start your weekend off on the right foot (or left foot if you're a leader)! In May, we are doing 4-Count Hustle the dance that made Disco hot. It's fun, as easy as they come, and you can have a great time with only a couple of moves.

In June we are switching to Rumba. If Hustle is the King of Disco, then Rumba is the Prince Charming of Romance. Slow, not too hard, easy to use, it's a definite upgrade from that stand-and-sway thing you started doing in middle school.

These workshops do occasionally sell out, so be sure to register ahead of time to save your space. Details and registration online at http://www.sapphiredance.com/GroupLessons.php?d=1

NRV Historic

Tuesday, June 13
Learn to dance like Jane Austin, but in casual clothes

Keep the jeans and sneakers. Or even the yoga pants and slippers. You don't need to dress up to enjoy the elegance of historic dancing.

Dancing on the New at Nesselrod on the New

Join us for a lovely afternoon of dancing! These outdoor, afternoon dances at Nesselrod on the New in Fairlawn/Radford will be on the 2nd Sunday on even numbers months through October (to complement the in-studio dance parties on odd numbered months).

June's Nesselrod Party will feature a lesson in East Caost Swing and Carolina Shag - a little heavier on the Shag than last time. Registration is open now, so you can go ahead and save your space. We do already have registrations for June and April's Dancing on the New sold out. So don't wait - you know it sounds fun!

This event is outdoors but well sheltered, so rain and other weather shouldn't be a problem. Unless it's actually dangerous to get there - like a hurricane (yeah that kind of happened last fall). The floor is smooth concrete - splendid for my second best pair of dance shoes. It's the perfect outdoor venue for us dancers!

Back to Top.

Sapphire's group classes and workshops are always small, low stress, and fun. They are a great way to meet other people who have also decided to learn to dance, as well as get to know our teaching staff. It doesn't take any long-term investment to get started, no special clothing or shoes - just something comfortable to wear and a sense of adventure. So, take the plunge and try it out.

All classes (in person or online) require registration by noon the day the class starts. We are happy to add late-comers if we can, but classes may be cancelled or rescheduled if registration is low.

Five ways to register, just choose one and we'll take care of the rest:
1 - reply to this email info@sapphiredance.com;
2 - register and pay at the same time at our online store at SapphireBallroom.square.site;
3 - talk to your favorite Sapphire Staff member;
4 - give us a ring at 540-382-8782;
5 - Blacksburg Group classes are best registered through the Blacksburg Community Center webpage.

Thanks for reading; we hope you found something you liked. Until we see you again, happy dancing!
