Sapphire Dance News - November 2014

Happy Halloween everyone! And Happy November, too! We had a “spook-tacular” time at our October Dance Party and were very impressed with the costumes this year. Check out the pictures from our Monster Bash on our Facebook page. We also want to give a shout out to Old Man Kelly & The Streetsweepers, for putting on a great show for us dancers. There will be pictures up soon from that one, too. :^)
October was awesome; let’s see if November can keep up the pace!

1) Gobblers Gala Dance Party - Saturday, Nov 8

TurkeyBack when we had 4th Saturday dances, we used to call our November Dance “Dance the Turkey Away” because it always fell after Thanksgiving and everyone was stuffed to the brim. Now, with this 2nd Saturday dance coming so close behind Halloween, we could rightly call this “Dance the Goblins Away.” Regardless of which holiday you are “recovering” from, this is the season of eating and you should just consider it fuel for dancing.

Linda- DailDance Parties are not only a great time to burn calories, they are also a way for you to meet other dancers. And dancers in this area are some top notch folks, not that we are biased, of course.

So plan to come practice your dancing, hob nob with other dancers, and celebrate the season with a fun, food-inspired playlist featuring all your favorite dances. The evening will begin with a Fox Trot lesson taught by Linda, but plan to dance a mix of Ballroom, Latin, Swing, and more!

2) New Group Classes in Blacksburg & Christiansburg

bburgThis is our last set of classes in Blacksburg for this year, so you don’t want to miss it! With a mix of Latin, Swing, and Ballroom options there is a lot to choose from, including some higher levels.

Beginning Dancers, or folks interested in trying a new dance, can choose from the Romantic Rumba and Springy Swing on Tuesday nights and the Hip Hustle and smooth Night Club 2-Step (aka - "That Slow Dance"). Or take them all!

For you "repeat offenders" (who are not offensive at all - really the opposite!), there's two continuation classes! On Tuesday nights, the “Class by Request” will be a Level 3 Argentine Tango. On Wednesdays, it will be a Level 2 Fox Trot. Check out the line up at

SwingThere a few ad hoc classes and possible classes brewing in christiansburg as well as the rocking line-up in Blacksburg.

There is a group starting a Level 2 Single Time Swing here at the studio in C’burg on Wednesday nights at 7pm. We also have a group just finishing up Level 1 Bachata and possibly looking to continue to Level 2. Let us know if either of these interest you!

Not sure which class to take? As always, we are here to help you choose a class or two that will fit your needs. Call us at the studio, 540-382-8782, or shoot us an email at

3) Silver Waltz: Part Deux - Starts Monday!

smoothLinda taught a Silver Waltz class back in June that turned out to be one of the biggest, most exciting classes of the year! Linda is back in action starting this Monday with another, 4-week Silver Waltz class intended to build from the first one. So if you attended in June, this class is for you! Even if you missed the last Silver Waltz class, if you have a solid foundation through Level 4 Waltz and an introduction to Silver Waltz, then this class if for you too!

4) Low Level Upper Levels...the best of both worlds!

Lane- LewisNo, it’s not a contradiction of terms, it’s the best of both worlds! Our Monday night Upper Level Workshops are a one evening blast of information and fun, where experienced dancers come to learn new patterns and techniques to incorporate into their dancing. These Upper Level Workshop vary widely in difficulty and so there are some lower levels that are a great place for people who are working their way up to the Monday night crowd. Three of these lower level upper level workshops are coming up this month!

The first is a Rumba, First and Final Flourishes this Monday, November 3rd at 8pm. This class is all about fancy ways to enter and exit your Rumba - which can be applied to other styles as well! Then we have a Single Time Swing Technique Workshop to add some sleek style to your Swing on Nov 10. Finally, Level 2/3 Salsa will fire up new variations on old friends on Nov 17.

Check out all the details at and plan to come ease your way into more and more advanced dancing!

5) Argentine Tango with Karen Jaffe of TangoGypsies

We are excited to be welcoming Karen Jaffe,, to Sapphire! This weekend will offer you the skills you need to get you out on the floor and enjoy this wonderful social dance. We have a weekend full of workshops, a practilonga and private lessons. Read below for more details and be sure to reserve your spot!

Friday, 7-9pm, Path to Tango

A workshop designed to help newcomers take their first steps in Tango OR for more experienced dancers to refresh, review, and refine. Information, practical application, and feedback will focus on technique for the embrace and walking, with a strong emphasis on comfort, connection, musicality, and navigation.

Saturday, 11am-2:30pm, Next Steps in Tango

While continuing to reinforce fundamentals in walking, connection, and musicality, we will explore technique for pivoting, change of directions, and turning, and begin to move into a close embrace. Depending on the time, and the group desire, we will also work in the 2 systems of walking, and explore "la cruzada".

Saturday Night, 8-11pm, Practilonga!

A practilonga is a relatively new social dancing event that combines the relaxed etiquette of a practica with many of the same elements you will find at a more formal milonga. Karen Jaffe will be DJ and will perform with partner, Michael D'Elia.

6) The Gift of Dance

giftIt’s always a pleasure, as we approach the holiday season, to see the smitten significant others and spouses coming through our doors excited to be buying dance lessons for their sweeties. It’s also fun to get phone calls from relatives of our dancers who were *instructed* to use Christmas as an excuse to help feed someone's dance addiction. We have even helped people surprise their co-workers and employees with the gift of dance! Dance is a one-size-fits-all type of gift that makes everyone happy. If you are short on ideas or looking for something sure to please, check out some of the gift packages we have put together starting as low as $28,
