Hey folks - I promised you a new playlist "to take with you" in the newsletter last week. Well here it is. What is a To-Go playlist? Read on to find out! Also - we’ve got things starting this week and next: Historic Dance Workshops (everybody welcome!), a Level 4 WCS 4-week class, Fox Trot Deep Dives, Carolina Shag getting groovy on Fridays, and beginner Salsa. Details on all that below.
Tango To Go, plus several co- “to-goes”
So - lets say, you’re going to a wedding next month and you’ve been coming to lessons with us long enough that you feel like you could maybe do this cool new dancey thing in public. But - will the DJ have the correct music? Maybe. Probably. But will they know what the correct music is? Probably not. Not unless they are a frequent ballroom dance dj or a dancer themselves. The solution? Bring your own playlist! Have a handful of popular songs that work for your dance style you can ask for by name.
You can always visit our YouTube Channel to find almost 30 playlists of songs to practice to, but they won’t necessarily be songs the average event DJ would have. So - here’s a customized list, geared specifically towards this situation.
I started with the dance I expected to be the hardest - American Tango. Not into Tango yet? Don’t despair - this list will still have songs for you. Since traditional Tango music does not fit the typical American pop zeitgeist, you’ll find most of these songs are also Hustles or Cha Chas. In fact - only three are songs where my immediate choice was Tango. They are at the top of the list.
I would, however, think twice about asking for Toxic at your friend’s wedding.
Die Another Day by Madonna
Toxic by Brittany Spears
Higher by Michael Bublé (also a Cha Cha)
The next few are all Hustles that also happen to work well as Tangos. These are on the fast end of the comfort zone for 4-Count Hustle, and that’s part of what makes them work well for Tango.
Love Runs Out by OneRepublic
Counting Stars by OneRepublic
Time of Our Lives by Pitt Bull & Ne-Yo
I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas
And this last group for today is all Cha Chas that are also Tangos. This overlap is frequently called Tang-Cha or Cha-Cha-Go, because silly is fun.
I Need To Know by Marc Anthony
Dynamite by Taio Cruz
Black Magic Woman by Santana
