Dance Styles

Please call us at 540-382-8782 with any questions.

No partner necessary. Registration and fees vary by location. Please check the individual listing for details. page for details. Group classes are 4 lesson-hours long. Most classes meet for 1 hour per week.

Workshops are classes that require only a 1-day commitment. These can vary in length from 1-3 hours, and vary in skill level necessary to participate.

Prerequisite classes can be replaced by private lessons. Contact us for details or to schedule your private lessons: 540-382-8782, info@sapphiredance.com.

Class-By-Request

These time slots are reserved for students to request specific classes. If you have a class in mind, look for a couple time slots that work for you and contact us. We’ll try to find at least 5 other people who want that class, and presto! We have a new class (by request).
Note - CBRs must be organized no less than a week before the class starts.

Bachata

Slower than Merengue and Salsa, Bachata is a Latin Dance Club must. The step patterns and rhythms are easy enough for new dancers to try and a great lead up to faster Salsas.

Bolero

Bolero is a beautiful and dramatic dance, characterized by its smooth styling and "drop & drift" action. Testing our control and balance, this dance is suited for slower Rumba rhythms.

Carolina Shag

Who doesn't love Beach Music? Wouldn't you love to be able to dance to it? Carolina Shag is all about beach music, groovin' in the sand, and fancy feet. The material will mostly be lead/follow patterns, with only a few "mirror patterns."

Cha Cha

Fast and sassy, Cha Cha is an energetic, sexy dance which works well with club, hip hop, country, and classic rock as well as popular Latin music. .
After the excitement of Cha Cha, try the romance of Rumba or the fun of Merengue.

Country Two-Step

Country two-step is a fast-paced dance that really travels around the floor, and is all about turning the girl. So, if you like to spin or be spun, this dance will knock your socks off! Boots and Hats not required.

East Coast Swing

Single Time and East Coast Swings - two of our most popular swinging styles pair up to make this class fun and energetic full of bounce, rhythm, and groovy moves.

First & Final Flourishes

Ever feel awkward starting a dance? Not sure how to get moving, and not sure what to do when the music ends? Feel the desire to learn a dip? This class is for you.

Fox Trot

Breezy and fun for beginners! Step out with your baby and swagger like Astair onto the dance floor with this Ballroom classic, perfect for dancing to to the old crooners. Frequently done to big band favorites, Fox Trot makes a great wedding dance.
Once you've embraced Fox Trot, try gliding through Waltz or Tango.

Historic Dance (English Country Dance)

English Country Dance is a form of Social dance which originated in England in the 17th century and was danced throughout the American Colonies during that period. This dance style holds the roots of both modern Square Dance and Contra Dancing as well as being a major influence in Appalachian group dances. Social dancing in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries was an integral part of English and Colonial American society, bring together neighborhoods, families, and communities - a tradition the NRV Historic Dancers hope to carry on.
Join the English Country Dancers of the New River Valley Historic Dance Society as we laugh, dance, and enjoy each other's company while learning dance new to us, but old as the 13 Colonies.

Hustle

Get down and boogie - Disco Fever is still raging and there's nothing like Hustle to get you groovin' and movin'. 4-Count Hustle is done to fast music and danced with a steady, driving rhythm. 3-Count Hustle speeds the steps up for slower music and adds some excitement and syncopation to the rhythm. These classes/workshops will cover both styles as well as the turns, turns, and more turns which made the Disco Inferno Hot! (4-week Classes focus more on 4-Count, while workshops address both styles equally.).

International Rumba

A slow and passionate dance, International Rumba shares many figures with its American cousin, but has a style and grace all its own.

Intro to Social Dance

Don't spend another evening watching others dance! This class will take you on a tour of some of our most popular social dance styles. You will learn the basics of lead and follow, dance position, and a mix of slow and fast dances. Material can be partially determined by class requests.

Junior Ballroom

Learn to glide across the dance floor and twirl with your partner to incredible music, both current and classic.
Intended for teens ages 12-18, these classes will cover the basics in social dancing in 2-3 styles, including some fun figures, as well as prepare one piece for performance.

Lindy Hop

Any Hep Cat can tell you – this dance is smooth and sophisticated! Lindy Hop is a flashy swing dance often shown in movies and commercials. While there are many different types and styles of Lindy today, we will focus on a slotted 8-count dance with a healthy dose of 6-count mixed.

Line Dance

Line dance is an easy and fun way to get your feet moving and your toes tapping. As sassy or as reserved as you decide to make it, this “solo” style of dancing gives you the moves and then the freedom to let your own personality shine through.

Merengue

Fun and easy for new dancers! Get the party going with this fast, flirty Latin dance, full of hip action and great for Latin, club, and other fast music.
After you've partied with Merengue, try flirting with Cha Cha or falling for Rumba.

Nightclub 2-Step

Looking for something interesting to do to all those slow songs at weddings or office parties? Here's your dance. Nightclub 2 is a slow, romantic dance suitable for proms, banquets, weddings (especially the First Dance), and any other special occasion.

Paso Doble

Get swept up in the drama of the matador! This dance starts deceptively simple, but adds flash and passion in quick movements, exciting and variable timing, and lots of complex partnering.

Polka

Tired of watching other people Polka? You'll find this fun dance at family reunions, festivals, and (of course) Oktoberfest - really anywhere there's a fiddle. This class will take bits and pieces of several traditional polka styles and combines them into a fun, socially dance-able ensemble that will serve you well in lots of environments. Learn the basics, stop watching, and start dancing!

Quickstep

On your mark, get set, DANCE! Get ready to fly across the floor in the fun, fast-paced world of Quickstep. We'll cover a selection of traveling and cornering steps which will leave you prepared for take-off.

Rumba

Great for beginners, Rumba is the Dance of Love. Slow and romantic, Rumba's casual luxury suits many popular music styles making it a favorite with new dancers and a great first dance for a wedding.
Once you've fallen for Rumba, try flirting with Cha Cha or partying with Merengue.

Salsa

Learn the hottest dance around! Kick up your heels and make sparks fly as you spin and shine on the dance floor. This fast, sassy dance is the epitome of the Latin dance-club experience. Samba

Samba is an exotic, fast-paced dance based on Brazilian rhythms and sporting a look and style unlike any other Latin dance.

Sampler

Absolutely perfect for new dancers, the Sampler is for everyone interested in dance classes, but not sure where to start. Come out to see styles featured in the upcoming classes, hear about discounts, ask questions, and learn a little dancing. This one-hour class is your chance to try us out before committing to a 4-week class.

Silver Waltz / Fox Trot

We're taking Waltz and Fox Trot, the quintessential Ballroom styles to a whole new place: more travel, more flow, more silvery shine!

Single Time Swing

Fast and fun for new dancers! Jive and jitterbug to big band swings with this hip, happy dance filled with exciting twists and turns sure to get your toes tapping.

Tango

One of the standards of the Ballroom world, the staccato timing and stalking grace of Tango create a passionate energy perfect for avid dancers.
Once you've embraced Tango, try gliding through Waltz or Fox Trot.

Technique

Good technique is all about making your dancing look and feel good: learning better ways to move, maintain your balance and control, and use your body. You can learn patterns all you want. Until you learn to do them well, are you really dancing?

Triple Time Swing

Triple Time Swing is done to groovy rock n' roll, new wave, and up-beat blues. These classes/workshops will talk about how to get that swingin' style as well as the turns and timing changes which make East Coast Swing the big daddy of swing styles.

Waltz

The light and airy grace of Waltz will have you gliding across the floor - whirling like you're in a classic romantic movie! Excellent for beginners, Waltz will sweep you off your feet.

Wedding Series Class

Want to do something special for your first dance? Want to capture the elegance and whimsy of your special day in a dance? We can help with that.
In any of these 4-week classes, you will learn the basics of a dance style perfect for Wedding Couples to use for a First Dance. You will get few fun moves, an entrance, and an exit in that style as well as learn how to work with your partner to make an incredible wedding dance.

West Coast Swing

Slinky, sassy, and sexy - what more can you ask for in a dance? Slightly more challenging than East Coast Swing, West Coast is a swing style that's all about music and attitude.
